Will Police Complaint About $3.3 Million Create Havoc For Candidates

Getting ready to use clout in city elections?
As reported in the current edition of the Elk Grove Citizen, the Elk Grove Police Officers Association (EGPOA) has filed a Freedom of Information request with the city of Elk Grove regarding the recently approved incentive package to relocate California Correctional Health Care Services to the city.

EGPOA President Dan Koontz was quoted in the story saying that his group was not happy with the $3.3 million awarded to the agency and developer Pappas Investments.

Money, votes?

Although Koontz did not specify why his group was unhappy with the incentive, as often is the case in these situations it likely revolves around money and the clout that association will carry in next year's city council and mayoral election.

Like most city employees, the EGPOA made their share of sacrifices in the face of the economic downturn that is still hitting local municipalities hard. With the incentive money coming from the city's reserves, when contract negotiation time comes around the city will either rightfully, or conveniently, depending on your perspective, claim there is not enough money for raises or benefits enhancements.

If this does indeed take place, the EGPOA will undoubtedly shop around for candidates who support their needs - and raises. What self-respecting candidate wouldn't want to have the endorsement of Elk Grove's finest, or their association at least, going into an election?
