Scherman Rebuffed in Bid To Form Veterans Memorial Hall Advisory Committee

10:23 AM - No comments

During Wednesday night's Elk Grove City Council meeting, Council Member Sophia Scherman pushed her fellow members to form an advisory committee for the proposed veterans memorial at the forthcoming Elk Grove Civic Center.

Watch the discussion below.

Scherman, a longtime supporter of local veterans and their causes wanted the city council to form a committee of veterans to advise the council on what they would like to see see in a veterans hall. Council members Jim Cooper and Gary Davis said the individual components of the civic center should be heard collectively and not separated on a "piecemeal" basis.

Scherman retorted that it should be done this way as the proposed civic center sports complex had its own committee. Both Cooper and Mayor Steve Detrick quickly interrupted and said no such committee exist.

So what is going on here?

One likely motivation for Scherman is she wants to enshrine her legacy in the civic center. With her current district drawn out of existence and her name not being attached to the new civic center when it is finally dedicated, this might be her last shot at putting her mark on the civic center.

Or it could be just petty jealously.

As Scherman herself said during this very conversation, there has been much talk about the sports complex which she doesn't have her name attached to. Ergo, if she could spearhead the formation of the veteran advisory committee it would would shine the light on her and her causes.
