'Public safety is not the county's priority' Sac DA says

In a new conference this morning, Sacramento County District Attorney Jan Scully outline cuts to her department and took a swipe at the Sacramento County Board of Supervisors.

Scully's news conference was held to announce the cuts that are part of a $6.9 million budget cut of the DA's office was forced to absorb as part of the Sacramento County Budget for fiscal year 2012. The county cut $90 million from the county's $3.5 billion budget.

Scully said the cuts would result in the elimination of 63 positions within the department. There will be 42 layoffs, the elimination of 12 vacant positions and nine retirements.

Among the units being cut within the department is the special investigations unit which investigates and prosecutes white-collar crime and public corruption. Scully also said there will be no prosecutions for theft under $950 or misdemeanor drug cases.

"Public safety is not the county's priority," Scully said.
